Court to rule on Binance executive’s bail October 9

Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, fixed October 9, to rule on the fresh bail application brought before the court by the detained Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan.

Gambaryan is facing a $35.4m money laundering charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

His counsel, Mark Mordi, while arguing the bail application told the court that his client’s health is “perilous”.

He prayed the court to grant Gambaryan bail for six weeks to seek proper medical attention outside the prison as he was not getting adequate medical attention.

“We plead that you admit the second defendant (Gambaryan) to bail on liberal terms. It is an application for the second defendant to be granted bail for a six week period to get medical attention. The application is supported with an affidavit deposed to by one Sunday Ameh,” he said.

EFCC’s counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, objected to the defence counsel’s submission.

He asked the court not to grant the bail application as the second defendant can be treated while detained at the Kuje correctional facility.

He said, “It’s not sufficient to say because he is sick, he has to show compelling reason that he cannot be taken care of in the facility.”

He added that a medical report from the State House Clinic indicated that Gambaryan had refused medication and treatment.
