OAU college students search justice for colleague killed in street crash

The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Friday, referred to as for security measures on the Ife-Ibadan Expressway following the demise of a final-year pupil of the establishment, Esu Ema.

The administration of the establishment on Thursday introduced the demise of Ema, who was allegedly killed by a dashing driver, recognized as Lasisi Sodiq, close to the campus gate.

In a launch, the Public Relations Officer for the establishment, Abiodun Olanrewaju, stated the deceased pupil with the matriculation quantity FRM/2019/041 “was knocked down and killed by a Lexus car with Abuja Registration Number ABJ 427 LQ driven by one Lasisi Sodiq.”

Olanrewaju additional defined that the coed was going to the campus to submit her closing 12 months challenge to her supervisor when she was knocked down whereas crossing the Ife-Ibadan Road.

The college students’ union president, Omoboriowo Damilola; Secretary-General, Babatimehin Kínfẹ́ọsi, and PRO, Aka Daniel, in a joint assertion, demanded instant steps from the federal and state governments to stop such incidents from reoccurring.

“It is important that the government prioritises the implementation of key infrastructure and safety measures to protect the lives of our students,” they stated.

The union sought the institution of a delegated storage for Lagos-Ibadan buses, noting that “this will create a specific area for bus routes and parking, reduce congestion and ensure clear visibility on the highway intersection for our students. Safety on this road must be guaranteed for all our students.”

The union additionally demanded enforcement of velocity limits on the street and sought that velocity bumps be put in on the expressway in addition to “functioning pedestrian bridges outside the campus gate, particularly on the Ife-Ibadan Road.”

In the identical vein, the union president in a separate letter directed to the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Umar Abba, demanded the diligent prosecution of the suspect behind the crash that led to the demise of the coed.

“We respectfully request that the case be handled with the utmost seriousness and that the suspect be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the president stated.
