The Niger Delta Budget Monitoring Group has urged the Federal Government to analyze instances of human rights violations that occurred throughout the starvation protests which started nationwide on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
In a press release by its Chief Executive Officer, High Chief Anthony George-Hill, and a member of the Nigeria Civic Space Protection Alliance, Stiv Obodoekwe, the group emphasised the necessity for the federal government to make sure democratic freedom and safeguard the civic house.
The group issued this assertion following its two-day civic house safety coaching in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The assertion reads, “The authorities should promote and shield the human rights of residents always. Therefore, the federal government ought to create an enabling surroundings for residents to breathe and train their rights.
“Considering the significance of human rights and civic house to the survival of democracy, we name on the federal government to prioritise residents’ pursuits and the safety of human rights and civic house in its agenda, insurance policies, and actions.
“The authorities ought to take critical steps to make sure democratic freedom, the safeguarding of civic house, human rights, and the rule of regulation. Authorities ought to enable residents to train their rights to freedom of expression.
“Authorities should ensure that incidents of rights violations and civic space suppression are properly investigated, and state actors found culpable should be brought to justice.”
It, nevertheless, cautioned people or teams calling for a regime change by the army, including that democracy remained a greater choice than a minute of army rule.
“Nigeria should be a democratic model in Africa, irrespective of its ups and downs,” the assertion added.
